My first long trip at fifty-eight

Two weeks in northern Portugal, booked badly and enjoyed anyway. What a first-timer would do differently, written while it is still fresh.

Peso da Régua, day one

I had my passport, my insurance, my hire agreement and my prescription list in four different places, and I spent the first afternoon of a two-week holiday finding out which pocket each was in. One wallet with labelled sleeves fixed a problem I did not know was a problem until the third time somebody asked me for a piece of paper.

Pinhão, day five

The second thing: I packed for two weeks and wore the same four things. Two merino shirts did the work of six cotton ones and took up a third of the space. Nobody tells you that the correct amount of clothing for a fortnight is roughly four days' worth, because it sounds like a trick. It is not a trick.

Where this happened

Douro Valley

Northern Portugal · 41.1° N, 7.8° W · best March — November

Terraced hillsides and a river road with more switchbacks than distance. A good first international drive: short legs, dense towns, forgiving signage.
